Circular Flooring Final Conference: New products from waste PVC flooring and safe end-of-life treatment of plasticisers

Circular Flooring Final Conference: New products from waste PVC flooring and safe end-of-life treatment of plasticisersBrussels – On 4 July 2024, the EU project Circular Flooring invites you to find out about the project’s key findings and results at its Final Conference. Over a period of five years, the consortium of the EU project Circular Flooring has researched how to develop a recycling process for end-of-life PVC floor coverings that dissolves and removes undesirable legacy plasticisers (e.g. DEHP) in order to achieve a high-quality virgin-like PVC material for the manufacturing of new PVC floor coverings.

Used flexible PVC floor coverings may contain specific plasticisers that must not be used today for reasons of legal requirements and consumer protection. The only way to dispose of end-of-life flooring containing these plasticisers has been thermal recovery, which wastes valuable raw materials. The Circular Flooring consortium met this challenge by developing a recycling process that offers the possibility to separate PVC from undesirable legacy plasticizers and therewith to recycle PVC for future production of floor coverings. At the same time, the separated plasticizers are transformed into uncritical plasticizers that are compliant with EU legislation and meet consumer needs with regard to circular economy.

At the Circular Flooring Final Conference “New products from waste PVC flooring and safe end-of-life treatment of plasticisers”, the consortium will present the project results and their contribution to the EU goals of establishing a circular economy.

What you can expect:

  • keynote speech by a representative of the European Commission
  • video on the Circular Flooring project
  • presentation on key findings and results by the project coordinator
  • panel discussion with scientists, policy makers and stakeholders on the topic: “Turning challenges into chances: Pathways towards a sustainable circular economy of durable plastics”

Recommendations for future European policy implementation and research needs in the field of circular economy will also be provided. The event will take place at the Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the EU in Brussels and is organized in cooperation with the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR). Participants will have the opportunity to network with peers, exchange ideas and build new partnerships.
